Cognitive Artifacts
نویسنده
چکیده
Artifacts pervade our lives, our every activity. The speed, power, and intelligence of human beings are drambtically enhanced by the invention of artificial devices, so much so that tool making and usage constitute one of the defining characteristics of our species. Many artifacts make us stronger or faster, or protect us from the elements or predators, or feed and clothe us. And many artifacts make us smarter, increasing cognitive capabilities and making possible the modern intellectual world.

Cognitive Artifacts in Refrigeration System Configuration?
“In watching people thinking in the wild, we learn about their environment for thinking not what is inside them. But the environments of human thinking are not ‘natural’ environments. They are artificial. Humans create their cognitive power by creating the environments in which they exercise those powers.” Hutchins, 1995: 169 This paper deals with cognitive artifacts and their relevance for con...
متن کاملCognitive-Computer Artifacts for Urban Art and Communication
Graffiti and ‘maker’ cultures use technology in ways that reveal specific effects of the urban environment. Researchers have paid little attention to how these cognitive artifacts – artificial devices designed to serve a representational function – are invented, acquired, or transmitted across individuals or generations, especially in groups outside of accepted criterion. This paper investigate...
متن کاملDistributed Cognition and Distributed Morality: Agency, Artifacts and Systems
There are various philosophical approaches and theories describing the intimate relation people have to artifacts. In this paper, I explore the relation between two such theories, namely distributed cognition and distributed morality theory. I point out a number of similarities and differences in these views regarding the ontological status they attribute to artifacts and the larger systems the...
متن کاملCognitive Stigmergy: A Framework Based on Agents and Artifacts
Stigmergy has been variously adopted in MASs (multi-agent systems) and in other fields as well—as a technique for realising forms of emergent coordination in societies composed by a large amount of typically simple, ant-like, non-rational agents. In this article we introduce a conceptual and engineering framework for exploring the use of stigmergy in the context of societies composed by cogniti...
متن کاملEmbodied Cognition in Animals and Artifacts
Based on experimental findings from the study of human cognition we discuss the concept of embodiment for artifacts. We argue that embodiment is linked to a concept of a body and is not necessarily given when running a control program on robot hardware. For this purpose we introduce the concept of ’body image’. Additionally, we stress the individualcharacteristics of an embodied cognitive syste...
